Course Overview:
Develop a structured sonographic approach to the lower and upper urinary tract in dogs and cats. This course reviews urinary anatomy, normal versus abnormal ultrasound appearances, and common pathological conditions affecting the bladder, urethra, kidneys, and associated structures.
 
Through practical examples and clinical applications, learners will study how to evaluate urinary abnormalities including urolithiasis, cystitis, bladder polyps, transitional cell carcinoma (TCC), renal disease, urinary obstruction, and congenital abnormalities. The course emphasizes efficient imaging strategies, including the kidney-to-adrenal efficiency clip, and how ultrasound findings guide further diagnostics and treatment decisions.
 
The course also explores advanced urinary presentations including hydronephrosis, obstructive nephrolithiasis, distal ureteral obstruction, and considerations for surgical versus interventional management approaches.
 
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, you will know how to
Understand normal urinary tract anatomy and sonographic landmarks
Perform a systematic evaluation of the lower urinary tract, including bladder and urethral structures
Differentiate normal versus abnormal urinary anatomy on ultrasound
Recognize common bladder abnormalities including stones, polyps, cystitis, and neoplastic changes such as TCC
Evaluate renal anatomy and recognize common renal sonographic patterns
Identify sonographic findings associated with medullary rim changes, polycystic kidney disease, perirenal pseudocysts, amyloid kidney, and congenital renal dysplasia
Recognize urinary obstruction patterns including pelvic dilation, hydronephrosis, nephrolithiasis, and distal ureteral obstruction
Apply sonographic findings to clinical decision-making, including when surgical or interventional approaches may be indicated
